In the Klopse tradition, the Voorlooper leads, but leadership here is not merely positional. It is rhythmic, symbolic, and deeply embodied. He sets the cadence of the troupe, guiding movement, music, and presence through the city. His regalia, plumed, structured, deliberate, is not costume but a visual language of pride and authority.

Historically shaped within conditions of displacement and marginalisation, the parade becomes a space of reclamation. The Voorlooper stands at its front as both guide and guardian, carrying continuity while asserting dignity in public space.

In this series, that role extends across generations. Youth step into the posture, rehearsing inheritance, learning how to stand, how to lead, how to belong. The images resist spectacle. Stripped of colour, they draw the eye to expression, gesture, and the quiet force of presence. This work refuses reduction, turning away from narratives of hardship as performance, and instead centring dignity, tenderness, and pride.
