Christiaan Beyers + Deeva Merwe | Divinity

For this series of portraits, we chose to work with Deeva’s mother, Tahira, who recently underwent a mastectomy. Our intimate relationship allowed us to delve deeply into her multifaceted identity within a dreamscape of reflection. With Christiaan’s technical expertise, we created a space in which we could experiment and play, using light and costume as forms of expression. In the process exploring states of dress and undress, masked and unmasked. This playground enabled Tahira to embody various characters that reflect her real-life passions for dressing up, makeup, and the Baroque period. These characters, or perhaps masks, represent the many facets of who she has been, who she is, and who she will become. The resulting phantasmagoric portraits tell a story of self-reclamation and, ultimately, healing.
