Johno Mellish | Left Leaning Horse (2025)
Exhibited as part of Ultraviolet Gallery's 'UNO' single edition photographic art exhibition 2025.
"This photograph is about the representation of a left leaning horse at night. This is something greatly under represented in gallery spaces, so I chose to bring to light this concern through the use of my phone camera as a vehicle for an interrogation of what it means to be a human looking at a horse at night.
The horse (as indicated in the title) is leaning left in the frame, or perhaps the frame itself is leaning left, raising the question: is the horse truly leaning? I would suggest it is, and if that’s the case then this may be the first documented instance of a left leaning horse. A true 1/1. Muybridge’s horse ran to the right and mine suggests something to the left.
Furthermore, to give the work some kind of aura, I asked a well known painter to forge my signature. Happily, this might increase the value of the work."
